Ok, I have seen that our T5 could potentially require the right oil to ensure the cam is preserved. Ours is a '59 plate T5 with a DPF so the below advises using VW 507 00 (5W-30)

Now I see all sorts of recommendations on the net, but I thought that the VWCC would be the best place to get definative advice for this crucial ingredient of the service.

AI came up with the following:

For a VW Transporter T5 2.5 TDI (2003–2010), the correct oil depends heavily on whether it has a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Use VW 506 01 (0W-30) for non-DPF (early AXD/AXE engines) or VW 507 00 (5W-30) for engines with a DPF. Capacity is approx 7.4–8 litres.

Key Oil Recommendations:
  • Without DPF (pre-2006/07): VW 506 01 (0W-30) is the factory specification, crucial for the cam's steep ramp angle.
  • With DPF (or later models): VW 507 00 (5W-30).
  • General/Alternatives: 5W-30 Fully Synthetic (Longlife III) is commonly used for 2003-2015 models.

Important Notes:

  • Oil Spec Check: Ensure you check if your T5 has a DPF, as using 507 00 in an older engine that requires 506 01 can cause cam wear, while using 506 01 in a DPF engine will block the filter.
  • Capacity: Roughly 7.4 to 8 liters are required for a full oil change.
  • Service Interval: 15,000 km or 12 months.
  • Brands: Castrol Edge, Motul X-Clean+, and Liqui Moly are highly recommended options.
Thanks in advance for your advice here

I use this for my 2.5
VW 507 00 (5W-30)

The important thing here is to establish what type of engine you have. It may be a PD engine where the injectors are run directly off the camshaft.
These engines were fitted for a while but I’m not sure from what dates.

These engines have a specific oil and it’s vital it’s used.
505.01 or 507 and you’ll be fine.

Thanks for that. If I took a video of the engine bay would an expert here be able to tell me what we have?

@SimonandJane From a trusted source! : hope this helps - worth getting a copy ?

Your V5 will tell you what engine is fitted, refer to the engine number prefix in the images

1.9 - 2.5 litres covered - see images

. - Google is your friend if you don't have a manual

A PD engine has a big wide cam cover on account of the extra set of rockers for the injectors.

Ah, so I found Total Car Check website and it gave me this. So according to this we have a PD engine and require 505.01 or 507 oil. AI also told me this:

Thank you so much for all this.

Thanks to everyone who helped answer this question for me.

Owning a Cali is a dream but like anything, knowledge is key to hitting those high mileages without any costly dramas.

Thanks again everyone, and I hope this thread is useful to other PD engine owners enquiring about engine oil

Hello Califriends, we just came back from the VolkswagenCampercentrum in Amersfoort Holland and the mechanic told us that a T5 174bhp automatic gear with lots of milelage (ours has now 355.000) its better to use 5W40 normal oil, than the 5W30 longlife (that also expensive) the 5W40 is slightly thicker and therefor better and runs the engine better.

The best site to go on is OPIE OILS, put your registration in and see what it comes up with.
What is good about this site is it has the SPEC sheets of the oil, so you can double check against the VW Oil number.
Always got me as to why VW ever came out with their ‘specific’ coding for oils, almost as if its some sort of hidden secret, and want you to go to a dealer for an oil change, because of the confusion it causes, similar to your post.

After a lot of research I use this

Millers Oils XF Premium C3 V 5w-30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil

Spec sheet ...........https://cdn.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/millersoils/20241121-5862-XF-Premium-C3-V-5w30-tds.pdf
But you will find, each to their own on oil (within reason) the same as when people ask about tyres.

The best advise really, for the small cost of oil and and a filter you are best changing it once a year irrespective of mileage, unless you re doing mega miles each year and change at 8,000 to 10,000 miles. Even if you choose Longlife oil.

The more oil changes you do, the better it is for the engine.

I had a 2006 SE and went through this. 2006 was the switchover year to dpf's and mine had one (positives and negatives to that discovery!).
After much research I landed on the following for T5 Cali's with a dpf (so 2006-2009)

The most important point about this version of “which oil” is the OPs engine being a PD.

Due to the design of this engine they can be particularly vulnerable to premature camshaft wear and as such, require a specific oil ie 505.01
and of course changed at 6k.
