Hi all,

So as many of you will be aware, with EVs you have a traction battery, typically 50 - 100 Kwh, that in many cases allow you to use this massive battery bank to access 230V. Typically capped around 3600w output, this is more than enough to dry your hair, cook breakfast on an induction hob and boil a kettle ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

No more DC to DC charging
No more solar needed
No more heavy power banks

Just plus and play. The video below highlights this evolutionary development at 30 minutes:

This really is the future in my view, making leisure batteries redundant and allowing weeks off grid at a time.

Thoughts?

If its off grid for weeks at a time, how would you charge it?

As long as 80%+ charged beforehand, there would be no need to charge for several weeks in the summer. And at least a week in the winter, based on the 10% per night for heat. The PV5 has a 71kWh battery, over 50kWh of which can be accessed using the in-built 230V plug socket.

Even with daily lights, phone and laptop charging, kettle boiling, microwave and induction hob usage, this is plenty for a typical couple for at least 14-25 days.

We've been using a 2kWh power bank and that lasts at least a day without charge, so do the math.

They’re already heavily discounting new Buzz’s. These things are going to put a dent in those sales further.

VW’s restrictions on using the heater, the traction battery etc are a real problem for camping. KIA have done the right thing.

Now, if they do a rugged 4wd version I’m sold :)

Agreed. The 'utility mode' allows the doors to be locked while keeping the 230V plug and all USBs etc, plus the AC or heater all fully working 24/7 - similar to Tesla's Camp Mode.

This is just for you, BTW:

I love the Kia van, but for me there is a problem, at the moment it is neither a proper camper nor a proper van. My son (T6 petrol head) test drove one and was really really impressed, so much so that he warned me not to test drive it as he knew that at that point I ‘would want one!’

It is way better equipped than the Buzz, half the price, 7 year warranty AND it has ‘Utility Mode’ which means the air con and climate control can be use for heating.

I have my eye on it for the future. A real bully bonus would be not having to deal with VW ever again :D

Ever since they showed that I’ve wanted them to deliver on the concept.

Let’s see if they will.

Keeping an eye on this. I’m a huge fan of electric vehicles.

Sad to say it pains me now to drive our Cali compared to our car :(

Love the Cali when camping but the drive is starting to feel very dated. .

Love the Cali when on the campsite obviously!

This is a 5 minute in-depth review of my next van, requiring no gas, solar or leisure batteries

How does the camping use impact the mileage?
Ie if you've camped for 25 days what range are you going to have left?

I really like the van but not struck on their interior. However I’m sure other converters will pick these up and offer more.

It looks nice but a little bit of form over function I reckon. My concern is the bed mounting…….. the bed may be M1 pull tested but it hasn’t been crash tested in the actual vehicle (ok, like most others I suppose). I would not want my grandchildren in the back seats……..

I saw one of these vans for the first time today. I wast sold on the looks, it looked very unfinished and odd at the front.
