I fitted a second Autoterm diesel air heater using original VW parts but with a Autoterm 4kw unit. I have the diesel heater option that blows air from vents but thats limited in time and occasions.

I get the parts from MAN trucks, much cheaper than VW.

Here is my fitment of ducting for Autoterm 4kw.
First picture shows outlet which comes off the heater and goes up through the floor under driver seat, just measure carefully. My son is a Autoterm installer and found this grey seat trim for VW.

Second is off air into heater taken from door step, that was easy, I removed all of door step trim.

I fitted "comfort" controller above drivers head.

Refillable gas is difficult to get and expensive, plus the original heater has limitations.
Oh that explains it, I thought you had the optional VW diesel heater but you obviously have the VW gas heater as standard. I fully understand your desire to have a diesel heater.

Looks a nice job.well done
We removed our gas Truma and fitted a diesel version
In cold weather you can run and run it with no concern in the way you would with how much gas bottle remaining
