I have a Cali Ocean and enjoy trips up to 4 weeks in Europe, staying mainly on campsites. Continually thinking of the benefits of a bigger van, but reluctant to move away from the factory built VW offerings so thinking of Grand California. As a couple, I sleep upstairs in the pop top with my wife downstairs which works well as we enjoy our own space at night. Being 6’ myself I’m wary of sleeping transversely downstairs and wonder how realistic it is for a single adult to use the upper bed? I know it’s usually mentioned as being better suited to children - but I’m used to the Cali’s pop top so the lack of sitting up space not necessarily a problem. I appreciate the best way to find out is to try it out, but our local dealer doesn’t have one so thought I’d ask here first.

its not just sitting up space! the gap wasn't wide enough for me to roll over unless I was under the roof light.

Ok that’s helpful, not really a sensible option by the sound of it.

The other problem I had was climbing up and having space to turn round once off the ladder.

If we had another GC we would be looking at making a downstairs bed in the dinette area or using a cab bunk.

I recall someone had their teenage son sleeping under the fixed bed with their head poking out by kitchen ! To me that would be preferable, or even sleeping on a foam mat on the floor in front of the kitchen.

I would suggest you hire a gc600 and try it, the bed feels bigger than the dimensions would suggest because of it widening at the kitchen end giving you the option of sleeping slightly diagonally etc.

Have you considered a 680, or is that too long/heavy? The bed is a good size, bit longer on kitchen side.
