Thinking of how I can best secure my new e-bike to the Thule Towbar rack, the rack locks to the towbar and the arms to the bike, but was thinking of a heavy duty chain etc. i am aware of the ratings and that Gold or Platinum is preferred by insurance companies but the choice is somewhat bewildering, I wondered if anyone had any recommendations? ideally it would be something that i can also use when out riding too. FYI, there will be either 1 or 2 bikes on the rack at the most and its for when I stop at the services on route or at the campsite mainly.

Thanks in advance

I use a Litelok as it's grinder proof. Pricey though..!

Litelock Core Plus? was one of the ones I was looking at....

Similar to you we have a couple of ebikes and the Thule XT2. Most of the time the bikes are inside on a slider tray so not so obvious.

Longer trips using the carrier, the bikes are locked on to it with an Oxford sold secure motorcycle chain and there is no way I'd ride with that in my bag. Halfords also do longer cables with eyes at each end for campsites and securing to trees.

For on trails and coffee stops we have a smaller combination lock which is I admit, limited to stopping the opportune snatch and ride away. Does your ebike also disable the motor using an app?

Thief with a portable angle grinder will get through anything....I use a couple of Abuse d locks and abus multilink locks.
Im curious to know if the locks referred to above (litelock core plus) are really "grinder proof".

I would not leave bikes on the rack anywhere in car parks or on street parking. Theft is rife in Europe and I was told by police that the only deterrent is to put bikes inside the van or take with you and chain up in busy pedestrian areas. . We were on a busy street in Maastricht and 2 bikes taken despite very good locks and all removable items put inside van.

Not grinder proof but the litelok contains Kevlar fibers which destroy grinder blades. It can be cut but, as several tests show, the grinder blade needs to be replaced at least twice during the process. It is much quicker to cut through three or four steel locks with a single blade.

As above, have a read up on them. I think my one took 5 blades to get through it. Not going to happen!

Yes it does have an e-lock and when out riding and a quick stop, a deterrent should do it, its more about overnight on the rack and whilst away from the van without the bikes, have the long cable type and the bikes lock onto the rack but looking to be bely and braces really

If you want a chain you need to go 16mm or more to stop pretty much all boltcutters. That won't stop an angle grinder though.

The anti-angle grinder U lock that seems to stand out in tests is the Onguard Rocksolid.

There is a loop under the towbar, but quite narrow..
