Evening all,

For all those out there in Cali land who are driven nuts by the brake dust problem, I'm wondering if anyone has fitted "Brake Dust Shields" to their California?

My Cali has the white alloy DISC "retro" wheels and brake dust drives me bonkers...

I know it shouldn't bother me, but it does, to the point where I clean the wheels very regular. It is made a little easier/faster to deal with because I've had the wheels ceramic coated and so long as you clean them reasonably regular, most of it does just rinse away but even so, I'd like to try and reduce the amount of brake dust being deposited on the wheels.

I did once over try and go down the "buy some pads that produce less dust" route, but I was not able to find any sort of definitive answer as to what pads were best, and so I wondered if the dust shields are any good.

I've heard some people say they can affect braking performance because the brakes don't cool as effectively/quickly, but we are talking about a California here, not a performance machine, so I'm thinking cooling shouldn't really be an issue.

Thanks.

But you do have a 3 ton vehicle that has to be stopped .

My front brakes only have 215000km. And yes, I do brake when needed. I'd like to know what other cars manage this?

Cars that do not use their brakes......

I used them 35years ago on an XR3I that my Wife owned. Worked well.

Of course, kind of didn't need saying really; but I also want to see if it is possible to reduce brake dust on the wheels, so the question I've asked is, is it possible to do both?

A concours vehicle can't stay that way if you want to use it. I admire your strive for perfection but, again, find it odd in a campervan.

Whilst I do perhaps go the extra mile in terms of keeping the Cali very clean, it does get used and so I'm not trying to keep it concours, I'm just trying to avoid so much dust gathering on the wheels. Given my wheels are white, you can clean them so they are spotless and after a mere 5 mile drive they are covered in dust again, especially at the front, so just seeing if there are ways to reduce it and thus reduce how frequently I have to clean them.

Of course, I could just not clean them very often, but as we all know, the dust will eat its way through the ceramic and lacquer top coat eventually and get into the paint; so I see nothing wrong with trying to keep my wheels looking good, but at the same time trying to reduce the maintenance.

If/when the time comes to replace brake pads/discs I highly recommend switching to Nutexa Frictions. I've done this and they are excellent pads, quiet and very low dust. I used to clean my wheels every 2 weeks or so and now about once every 1.5 months.

That's great! Thanks for the tip, I will certainly check them out :thumb

I moved from VWs OEM setup to Brembo Prime discs and pads.

Dramatic reduction in dust with those.
Done as a DIY were much cheaper, seem to be better quality and are wearing at a much lower speed than the originals.

Do you have a link to the specific pads/discs you fit?

This is the Brembo website where you can choose your vehicle and see the part numbers.

My van is a T6.0 2019 150Bhp which means I have the 340mm front big brakes
When I bought autodoc was noticeably cheaper, but take ~10 elapsed days to deliver

Don't use normal grease or copper slip if you decide to grease the slider pins. Need to use silicon or red brake grease so it doesn't react with the rubber boot.

I just noticed you have a T6 204. I'm no expert but I imagine it would also have the big brake setup being a bit heavier/more powerful.
I have this old chart that I lifted from somewhere when I was researching. You'd best check the disk size for your 204

You’re welcome. I highly suggest you check the T6 Forum website. They absolutely rave about the Nutexa Friction pads which is what led me to them. Many have tried Brembo, Pagod and others and the winner was the Nutexa’s. I simply don’t want to share the link out of respect for this forum.

I'm on the T6 forums, so I'll go have a mooch around on there, see what I can find.

Hopefully I will be able to rid myself of this brake dust irritation, not entirely perhaps, but certainly reduce it - thank you both for your input.
:cheers

I suggest replacing the pads with EBC GreenStuff pads. They do make a size for the brakes we have on our 204 cali. I have recently fitted them to my Mini Cooper S and they are brilliant. Loads less dust ad perform very well. I will fit them on the Cali when the pads get replaced next time.

Last I checked EBC was not available for the T6.1 fronts. T.6 is fine.

I spoke directly to EBC, and this is what they said...

I would normally recommend EBC redstuff pads, these are a low brake dust compound designed for both performance and casual driving, however unfortunately at this moment in time we do not offer these pads that are specifically designed for your vehicle, the best next thing i would be able to offer would be the Ultimax OE replacement pads, these are designed to work as identical if not a slight improvement from the OE pads you currently have on.
