Rear Internal Thermal Screens

Hi All,

Another stupid newbie question.

I have a Beach and was wondering if I need additional internal thermal screens for the rear of the van for when I go away in the winter in Scotland?

We have a beach and have parked overnight in winter in Scotland - slept in upper area and fine but it is warmer sleeping in the lower area without the roof up. It all depends on how warm your bedding is and how cold things get and how much you perceive the cold.

When we slept upstairs we didn’t. The time we slept downstairs we parked with the rear facing the sunrise and we did have an external windscreen on the front of the van for frost/ice prevention. The front protector screen had some frost on it on the outside but that was expected and acceptable. There was a small amount of condensation in the front as well that we did have to use a towel to clear but none in the rear that needed “mopping up “. We started talking water absorbing packs after that and place them between the windscreen and the internal front blind - haven’t used the towel for the screens since that - but we’ve always slept upstairs since that too cos we have a good extra matters and nice quilt and a backup heated throw (powered by an anker powerhouse “thing “) just to take the chill off. With the tog open and vents up in the roof I think that helps reduce window condensation. As an aside we did have one of the leaking roof bellows and that was another reason for the towel, and for sleeping downstairs, but we got the bellows replaced under warranty and fingers crossed that’s not needed towel treatment…

The only way to avoid condensation is good Ventilation. Open a downwind front window 2-3 cm and fit front window wind deflectors, many types available.
Once you have ventilation sorted then use the Parking Heater to maintain a suitable temperature. It can run all night and uses very little battery power and diesel.
ALL insulated window covers do is move the condensation to areas you can't see, behind trim panels etc, it will NOT prevent condensation only good ventilation will do that.

Front window insulation is especially useful as it reduces the risk of condensation followed by annoying streaky marks on the windscreen if you don't dry it diligently. I imagine that's less of a concern on rear windows.

For further info we don’t have an auxiliary heater…we’re used to dealing with the cold LOL

Well I suppose if you don't have one you wont miss it, but it does transform the vehicle.
