Hi everyone, we've bought our first Campervan T5 SE 180 2011. I've got it booked in to replace the leisure batteries (Varta LA80s) and need a new rubber hose for the passenger side washer just which seems to carry a small split. Only one more thing, the spare key it was supplied with starts the engine but doesn't seem to be paired/communicating with the Van. The red LED shows when pressed. Been assured it was THE actual spare key and see no reason to disbelieve. Is there a short cut to re pair the key if it is indeed a genuine original spare? (Not sure how it became unpaired in first place).

Happy to take to local gargage but thought I'd check first - Thanks guys!

To program a key for a 2011 VW Transporter, insert the key into the ignition, turn it to position two (without starting the engine), close the doors, and then hold the "lock" button on the driver's side door until a red light blinks on the key fob. If this method doesn't work, you may need to use a different procedure involving an existing key to the vehicle, or seek professional help from a Volkswagen dealer or locksmith.

Method 1: Using a Valid Key Fob
This is a common method for syncing a replacement key, provided you have another working key fob for the vehicle.

1. Insert the new key: into the ignition.
2. Turn the ignition to position two: (the "on" position, but do not start the engine).
3. Close all the doors .
4. Press and hold the "lock" button: on the driver's side door.
5. Continue holding the button until: a red light blinks on the new key fob.
6. Release the button .
7. Test: the key fob to ensure the locks respond correctly.

Method 2: Using a Second Key (if available)
This method is also a common self-programming approach.

1. Insert the first (working) key: into the ignition.
2. Turn the key to position two: (but don't start the engine).
3. Close all doors .
4. Press the "unlock" button: on the inside of the driver's side door.
5. If the vehicle's horn honks, the key is synchronized.

Sadly no effect on either procedure. I changed the battery also. I can only assume this isnt the original key. Incidentally the synced key didn't respond with a flash or a beep of the horn when using the recommended procedure.. I'l have to take it in. What would be a fair price to reprogram a key?

Look for an Auto locksmith near you they can often do this. I know VW charge in excess of £200 to supply and programme a new key.

+1 for that kit - simple and has worked well for the year or so.

Not sure whether you know and sorry to be the bearer of bad news if you didn't.....

This engine has a serious design fault which can lead to significant oil use, often at 60,000 miles plus.

The Internet has all the bad news if you do a search. Maybe your engine has already been replaced. Maybe the bad component (EGR cooler) has been replaced. Maybe you are lucky and the original engine has not deteriorated significantly.

Best case this is a false alarm. Worst case your engine has been terribly worn in multiple places by metal filings.

Keep a very close eye on oil use and consider action against the seller if this issue was not properly disclosed.

To counter this DOOM post.
I had the dreaded 180 biturbo for 10 yrs from new covering just short of 150,000 miles, before trading in for a T7 Multivan Hybrid. Oil consumption when sold was 0mls between annual oil changes.
SOME 180s were affected many more were NOT AFFECTED.
Just the same with the 204 biturbos. No one can confirm the actual cause only the symptoms.

Try this company for a new key. I bought one for my BMW car and I paid about £25 instead of the BMW replacement at about £200. And it works fine.
