Alternative uses for tailgate seat storage space

I’m thinking of investing in some Helinox seats as I find the VW ones not that comfortable and they have no head rest. They would also take up less space possibly freeing up the seat storage in the tailgate. With that in mind does anyone have ideas how the seat storage area in the tailgate could be put to alternative uses?

Anything lightweight but bulky could fit in. Such as sun canopies / shelters, waterproof clothing, etc.

Hi. We store the roof topper and screen cover and 2 pillows (pillows suctioned down).

I store a VW chair and Helinox sunset chair on one side. On the other side I have some packing cubes with spare clothes

we stored our two folded up Brompton bikes in their own B&Q plastic boxes in the rear space. it kept them contained and still left lots of room for other things.

B&Q plastic boxes? Any chance of a picture please?

Great ideas thank you. Just checked and there’s a British supplier for tailgate bags just in case that’s easier - plus one for this being a great idea as we’re 2½ weeks into a six stop tour of Britain for various different events and the two uncomfortable chairs less with the equivalent extra storage would have been ideal.

Good find :thumb
A search for California on the same website shows some other useful custom fit bags for the cupboards.

Wow! That’s remarkable

Surely you don’t mean in the tailgate chair storage do you?

Kayleigh, I found your post very interesting. I was in London recently and went to an outdoor shop and really liked the Sunset chair. Does it fit in the tailgate ok or does it require a bit of juggling? Also did you remove the polystyrene moulds for the purposes of the VW chairs?

No, it fits in really easily between the seat and back of the folded chair. It may push the Cali chair apart very slightly but the zip still closes as normal.

Wow! I never thought of that solution; amazing. I’m thinking i could leave one VW chair behind and use the second compartment for storing hook up cable, utility bag and shower kit in the other stuff etc. Like the colour of your van :)

If there’s two of you you’ll be fighting over the Sunset chair! It makes a good extra storage place. I have some of these bags on the other side with packing cubes of clothes stuffed further inside
They can fall out though if I unzip too far.

An alternative are these bags that I posted previously:

Is that just a bag in a bag?

Ditching the VW seats was the first thing we did. Too awful for words.

It’s surprising how much stuff you can fit in.

It’s mostly shoes/boots in our case. As long as it’s a snug fit and won’t fall out when unzipping etc.
