When is a VW Ocean NOT an Ocean? Answer below

So just casually browsing through the ads, I come across an advert for a 73 plate Ocean, yet am surprised to see it has the old physical dash, not the usual digi dash as ours does. So I investigate further and see that despite the vehicle graphic and ad content clearly stating 'Ocean' the lack of fog lights and light interior confirm that this is indeed a COAST. Perhaps a forum mod might inform the seller of their error and potential misleading perspective buyers.

Or am I wrong?

EDIT: Just seen the word, 'Surf' after Ocean. Is this somehow a re-named Coast?

The
Volkswagen California Surf is a mid-spec trim for the T6.1 campervan, positioned between the entry-level Beach and the top-tier Ocean models. It was introduced to offer a "proper" camper experience—complete with a full kitchen—at a more accessible price point than the Ocean.

Key Features of the California Surf
  • Fully Equipped Kitchen: Includes a two-burner gas hob, a stainless steel sink with a removable bowl, and a Waeco compressor cool box.
  • Sleeping Capacity: Accommodates four people with a loft bed in the pop-up roof and a rear bench that converts into a double bed.
  • Electro-Hydraulic Roof: Features an electric pop-up roof as standard, similar to the Ocean but unlike the manual roof on the Beach.
  • Performance: Powered by a 2.0 TDI 150 PS engine paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
  • Technology: Equipped with an 8-inch "Ready to Discover" infotainment system, three-zone climatronic air conditioning, and heated front seats

Thanks, WG, your post illustrates the absolute confusion caused by VW themselves here. They state that the Surf is both between the Beach and Ocean trim wise, and at a more accessible price than the Ocean, yet put misleading graphics on it calling it an Ocean!

VW call it a California Surf, yet put graphics on it saying 'Ocean' allowing people to list it as a California Ocean T6.1 which it is not. Utterly misleading.

TLDR; A California Surf is indeed an 'Ocean' branded COAST.

No it isn’t, it’s a distinct model that sat just below an Ocean. Effectively an Ocean with a few bits stripped out. The one shown in the advert should not have an Ocean sticker on it, it should have the surf one.

If you don’t know what details to look for it would be extremely easy to think you were buying an Ocean - the main similarity is that a surf has the Oceans electric roof.

Thanks for your take on it, Andy, but to me it is precisely the same as a Coast. No digi-dash. Lighter interior. No fog lights, etc etc. We agree that it should NOT have an Ocean sticker but a Surf sticker which I believe that others have.

I'm a bit out of date but it seems to lack privacy glass and are those 16in alloys?

Digi dash and fog light were always add-ons even for Oceans afaik. That Surf sounds to me just like a predefined spec set for Ocean (same as Edition etc.) So you would be getting proper Ocean in this case I think.

It’s either an ocean without a digi dash & no front fogs or it’s a coast with an electric roof, pano opening roof, LED headlights, ocean upholstery, 3 zone aircon, heated seats, 17” wheels( on some), double glazing, interior light concept, power latching on the sliding door, 5 bar chrome grille and the optional lighter cupboards.

Then there’s a few bits the surf doesn’t have that both the coast and ocean do including:
Awning, auto dipping interior mirror, adaptive cruise

Maybe take this up with the seller directly if it really bothers you?

Just sayin ;)

You could call it and Ocean - or a Coast +, but it’s clearly closer to the former than the latter.

If memory serves it was a parts bin model post Covid and during Ukraine to build a Camper with what they had available in the factory due to supply chain issues.

So definitely one or the other. Or somewhere in between

Back in 2010 it was much easier. You had the beach and you had the comfortline.
The beach was just a Multivan (or Caravelle) with a manual pop top. The comfortline was the Ocean.
Anyway, as I don't follow up newer models, I am not in a position to answer the OP's question.

I have one of these on a 74 plate - funnily enough in the VW documentation that came with it it’s an Ocean SE! But registered as a Surf! Brilliant vehicle - definitely a parts bin and really quite rare! Ours came from Eurovans and had no Surf or Ocean decals

The van advertised in the first post looks like a surf for sure. Full camper equipment but no blackout windows at the back and no awning, which was the tell-tale sign of the surf trim. Why the Ocean sticker is a bit of a mystery. Either factory error (a few of these mislabelled vans have popped up on this forum over the years) or the owner simply replaced the sticker (you can buy them).

The Surf trim was the replacement of the Coast trim. It was never advertised or branded as an Ocean.

Thanks, that was precisely the clarification that I was after. Perhaps VW placed the Ocean graphics on in error, or the owner replaced the Surf one as above. Either way it was very confusing and evidently NOT an Ocean.
