Hi all,

I have had my Cali 6.1 since May 2024. However an unusual problem has appeared and I haven’t a clue how to fix it. When using my iPhone as a sat nav it interferes with the virtual dash centre section. I normally have this section indicating speed but it somehow resets itself to indicate direction of travel. It happens most frequently during town driving. On motorways less so. I have attempted to reset it to no avail. I am not sure if it is the van software at fault or the iPhone is causing this problem. So over to all you boffins for some direction if possible.
Many thanks in anticipation.

It’s a really annoying “feature” of Apple Maps. If you use Apple Maps as a sat nav, every time you start it, the virtual cockpit switches to the Volkswagen Maps view. The Volkswagen map will display the distance and time of arrival from Apple Maps as well as the next turn. But it won’t actually display the route on the Volkswagen map, making the whole thing rather useless. One of those really half-arsed features that’s worse than the feature not being there at all.

As far as I know, it’s not possible to stop this from happening.

Only way is to not use Apple Maps at all. Use Waze or Google Maps instead - they don’t trigger the Volkswagen map.

Many thanks for your reply Mehdime. I do apologise for not being quite clear but this problem is happening with Google maps on both my phone and the wife’s phone ( both iPhones using G maps ). I did try waze sometime ago on another car but got fed up with the amount of information being displayed and by voice. I also like the GPS indication of speed on G maps which doesn’t seem to appear on the nav system installed by VW, which is fairly rubbish anyway.
Once again thanks.

I would suggest it's because it expects you to use the sat nav, and at which time it would then show the next instruction on the route rather than direction of travel.
I wouldn't expect there's a way to stop it, but a couple of clicks of the buttons should put it back to the speed in the centre for you. Alternatively, use one of the other digital dash views, which can also be customised in the head unit.

I’ve not noticed this happening, I have the digital mph in the RH “dial”, and don’t look at the centre but too much. But I’ll test it out tomorrow.

When you say towns are a more frequent issue sparked a memory. Around 23/24 our digital display was severely affected by G Maps (and Waze)., along with lots of others on the forum, and other VW cars such as Tiguans. The displays were corrupted and frozen when navigating a route. It was a mismatch between the head units software and G Maps. Gmaps constantly floods the head unit with positional data (ie where the van is located), and at the time, the head unit couldn’t cope. A few updates later (it took 18 months) things are stable (crossed fingers). During this time, moving in urban areas caused instant system chaos (lots of turns), but highways less so (fewer and slower changes of direction). Driving round a roundabout a couple of times quickly broke the system!!

So, I suggest a few things you might investigate.
First, make sure your infotainment system software is the latest release (I or others can act as a reference point if not on the VW app).
Also, see if the problem you have happens only when GMaps is navigating on a route, or just showing a map.
Third, see if it happens when on another CarPlay app, like Spotify or something.
And Fourth, test while using Apple Maps (this was usually stable for us when we had issues, and hence we got a liking for Apple Maps!).
