You need to buy a Kenwood interface lead for the controls to work, They are £100 approx. Don’t buy a third party lead as you won’t get full functionality.

I do have factory parking sensors. The VW agent fitted it for me so I suppose the interface was the one in the box.

Does it display the parking sensors on the 8021 ?

Yes.
Today I reset the software and reinstalled the steering wheel settings and am now happy.
I think the garage didn't go through the user settings.

It may be it just needed a reboot to sort the CanBus out, as no need to steering wheel settings as that’s for older resistive controls , yours is done by CanBus
