UK Diesel Price - are we having our pants pulled down ??

OK, so we all know the reason for the increase in fuel over the last month or 2, but.....
Just returned from a few weeks up in the Highlands and the Islands.

Diesel at my local Sainsbury's is currently £1.859 a litre for standard diesel.

Imagine my total shock and disbelief when I pulled into a little 'one stop' in rural Lewis, with 1 pump, Unleaded or diesel, and the Diesel price was £1.815.....and yes it was.
Leaving Stornaway on Monday, I filled up at another, albeit larger, garage, cum post office, come store, and paid £1.798 a litre. (they also had a stonking stock of good Highland Single Malts, and VERY keenly priced)
It was £1.849 in Fort William as we went through

Sure you all know that the only way that Diesel gets into Stornaway is via a ferry.

So you have to ask, why are we paying SO much more on the mainland in NW of England !!!!

Would the Scottish government be subsidising fuel to the islands? Not sure where the money is coming from though you might need to look at the accounts!

Just drove from Manchester City centre back home maybe 10m or so passed maybe 10 stations, diesel around £1.77 ish.

The differential in a lot of places is down to the Rural Fuel Duty Relief Scheme, which provides a 5p per litre reduction on fuel duty for retailers in specified rural areas to (supposedly) help reduce the cost of petrol and diesel for motorists.

FW was £181.9 last night on the way back home, it varies and often Edinburgh can be generally high than FW.

Locks Diesel (Shell) was £1.66 this morning, Hereford Tesco at £1.81.

What is the point of comparing costs of fuel from garage to garage.
The only constant is Government Fuel Duty and VAT of 20% on the overall cost/L.
The rest is comprised of the garage running costs , business rates , staff wages, Insurance, . PBy interest on Capital outlay for buildings etc, fuel storage and pumps, maintenance, actual fuel and delivery , statutory inspections etc, etc, etc and finally the dirty word Profit.
I very much doubt if many, in fact if any independent garages are ripping off customers and many Supermarkets etc use fuel as a loss leader.
It is what it is.
The one party making money from the fuel crisis is the Government. By putting up Business rates and minimum pay the overall cost is up and coupled with increased fuel and delivery costs from refinerys their VAT take has climbed significantly.
