I recently had auto trans serviced and now occasionally get a burning oil smell and sometimes a weird sound which I thought was wind coming through the pop top roof
Any ideas please

Oil leak from transmission onto exhaust and low transmission oil level?

A T5?
Your details says T7 Ocean 4 Motion?

What model year? Was it the 'sealed for life' transmission?

I have a 2008 T5 auto and have left it alone for 17 years but often wonder whether its a good idea to get fluids changed. I read a forum recently that suggested oil, gunk and metal bits probably keep the thing in one piece and best left alone.

Yes it’s a T5
Sealed for life means 60,000 kilometres according to my mechanic
My van has 300,000 on it and transmission has been done 3 times that I know of

Mine has done 65k miles and mostly on French motorways.
On our UK VW forums which are v good for mechanical advice there are always people saying it needs fluid changes, others saying “sealed for life” means the life of the vehicle so leave it alone and other stories of people using the wrong fluid which I think is quite a common mistake.
I’ve chosen to leave it alone.
