Ok, I have seen that our T5 could potentially require the right oil to ensure the cam is preserved. Ours is a '59 plate T5 with a DPF so the below advises using VW 507 00 (5W-30)
Now I see all sorts of recommendations on the net, but I thought that the VWCC would be the best place to get definative advice for this crucial ingredient of the service.
AI came up with the following:
For a VW Transporter T5 2.5 TDI (2003–2010), the correct oil depends heavily on whether it has a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Use VW 506 01 (0W-30) for non-DPF (early AXD/AXE engines) or VW 507 00 (5W-30) for engines with a DPF. Capacity is approx 7.4–8 litres.

Key Oil Recommendations:
- Without DPF (pre-2006/07): VW 506 01 (0W-30) is the factory specification, crucial for the cam's steep ramp angle.
- With DPF (or later models): VW 507 00 (5W-30).
- General/Alternatives: 5W-30 Fully Synthetic (Longlife III) is commonly used for 2003-2015 models.
Important Notes:
- Oil Spec Check: Ensure you check if your T5 has a DPF, as using 507 00 in an older engine that requires 506 01 can cause cam wear, while using 506 01 in a DPF engine will block the filter.
- Capacity: Roughly 7.4 to 8 liters are required for a full oil change.
- Service Interval: 15,000 km or 12 months.
- Brands: Castrol Edge, Motul X-Clean+, and Liqui Moly are highly recommended options.
