Roof Display / Controller Gone Dark

The roof display in my T6 Ocean has gone really dark. It isn’t visible in daylight and just about glows enough to use in the dark. Everything controlled by it still works. Is this easily fixed or a job for a specialist?

Firstly VW will just sell you a replacement - £900 or so.

It sounds as if the screen illumination has failed, but it may be repairable at a fraction of the cost of a new one.
