Hello everyone,

I’m a proud owner of a 2021 VW California T6.1 Ocean (2.0 TDI 150), which I have had since 2023, with about 35,000 km. Recently, I encountered a problem with the rear bench seat:
  • The backrest is completely stuck and cannot fold into the bed position at all.
  • The seat can still slide on the rails.
  • The folding handle works normally, but the backrest does not move at all.
My VW garage removed the protective cover and confirmed that the issue comes from the internal mechanism. According to them, this mechanism is considered a factory‑sealed VW component. As a result, VW requires a full replacement of the part, including labour, for a total cost of around 5,000 CHF.

Before committing to this, I wanted to ask the community:
  1. Has anyone experienced the same issue with a T6.1 Ocean rear seat?
  2. Were you able to repair or open the mechanism yourself or via a specialist outside VW?
  3. Any tips, workarounds, or trusted specialists in Western Switzerland who have handled this problem?
I would greatly appreciate any advice, experience, or suggestions you can share.

Thanks in advance!

Think one of the components is a bowden cable (part 14 in the diagram, 16 in the pic). That's the most likely culprit. Or one of the arms (9) has bent / come off its pivot
Only getting the back off will allow you to identify and correct. Failure in the upright position is easier to manage than when its flat in bed mode.

Should be available as individual parts, Your dealer doesent sound very helpful. Shame they didnt tell you which bit of the mechanism was faulty or provide a photo.

I think your dealer is not on the ball! All issues I have seen on here with suck rear seats, including ours were down to issues with the bowden cable. The seat is not a sealed unit.

Hi everyone,

Thank you very much to all four of you for your helpful replies, and a special thanks to Owen_h for sharing the photo — that seems really useful.

My VW dealer has now contacted Volkswagen to request a goodwill contribution, as my warranty expired only about 20 days ago... Before accepting any offer, I am considering asking for a second opinion from an independent garage.

At the moment, the plastic cover under the rear bench is slightly unclipped at the bottom, and I would like to try to remove it properly, like in the picture. Do any of you know the safest way to do this without damaging the cover? Which tools would you recommend? Even better, if you can share a tutorial video, I would really appreciate it, as I haven’t been able to find anything relevant online so far.

Thanks again for your support and for taking the time to help — it’s really appreciated.

Wishing you all an excellent weekend!

The poster said his rear bench was replaced under warranty when it got stuck. I would agree that seems a bit extreme but who knows with VW and warranty work. Could be some safety obsession in their mind not allowing remedial work on a seat.
Our seat got stuck down while we were on a 2 week tour of Scotland in the winter. I took it to Vindis who repaired it. I assume that they just refitted the Bowden cables. It got stuck again after only a few more uses. After a bit of wrangling, they wrote to VW and claimed the parts under warranty. To be clear, they only replaced the frame with the levers and Bowden cables. The seat base and the upper cushion were not replaced.

Thanks Samcb,
that's indeed what the garage is offering us.
Was your vehicle still under warranty? Because ours expired about a month ago.
Have a good day,

Yes it was still under warranty - we had 3 year warranty and the seat broke for the first time when it was just under a year old and for the second time when it was about a year and a half old. Vindis still had to plead my case as VW thought that we had damaged the seat.

Its many years since I removed the cover of the seatback (and my Beach is different to the SE/Ocean, as no flip down headrest or toolkit) but from memory its held on via various trim clips.
Some you can see from the outside: these appear to have an allen key hole but I have never managed to successfully unscrew them. Least damaging is to screw a small self tapping screw into the hole and the physically pull the plug out with pliers or mole grips holding the screw.
Then there will be some trim clips you cant see, these you have to pull away. In the photo posted by Colinfcolinf above you can see 6 small white circles (3 each side). Think these are the sockets where the plugs locate into.

Found a photo of the back of the plastic cover.

3 clips each side and 3 along the top.
