Hi All.

Bit of advice please. Got our van broken in to last night. Believe the key was cloned. Van was in driveway and paddle board nicked, nothing else.

House insurance suggest that paddle board not covered as was in vehicle (driveway)

Car insurance (comfort ins) suggests not covered a) because no forced entry evidence b) marine equipment not covered.

So the question is how do you insure your van contents and has anyone had this type of incident successfully claimed ?

V frustrating as the thief was on on cctv but hoody means no identification so no action can be taken by police.

Hate to ask the question, but are you sure they used a key (and if so how would they have “cloned” it, given how impossible it is to do so with a none keyless key) vs was the van just left open accidentally?

Note up front - I don’t know how secure the relay is on a T6 vs 6.1

I mentioned because 2 scallies turned up at ours on a moped last night and one walked around our drive while the other waited checking for nickables and trying the door handles.

They were most disappointed the only nickable was an old land rover spare wheel (heavier than he was) and that all our cars were locked.

Totally understand and appreciate the question. The honest answer comes down to how many times I want to ask the wife how sure she is .

Either way what surprised me was that paddle boards not insured in vehicle on driveway either via house or car ins.

V frustrating

Did you, by any chance, have paddle board insurance?
We are members of Go canoe or whatever they call themselves at the moment, so we are licensed to kayak on inland waters and we insure through them.
Just trying to think of alternatives.

W don’t have separate insurance for the board sadly but will look at this when replace

Did the van direction lights flash when they open the van (assuming the lights can be seen on the CCTV) - that would indicate if the van was unlocked by a remote key or left open (ie no flashes)?

Also worth checking the CCTV to see if the lights flashed when the van was locked, not uncommon for gangs to block the remote control frequencies and thus whilst people think they have locked their car, it is in fact left unlocked.

The CCTV might help prove the van was in fact locked for insurance claim.

Just for info the remote element (lock, unlock etc) part of the system is separately coded from the immobilisation and that element is very carefully controlled by VW when getting new keys. Relay station attack (the one that people put keys in pouches to prevent) is only for cars with Passive Entry - i.e. you don't have to press the key fob buttons, just having the key near the car and pulling the handle unlocks - so not a T6 issue as passive entry isn't an option.

This is very helpful. Thanks

I didn’t consider the indicators, great shout.

I would say this info may not help the marriage but certainly provides clarity to the situation

Sounds a lot of hassle and effort for a paddle board from this criminal gang.

As a side and interesting stat when the papers talk about number of vehicle thefts the big number is usually actually “thefts from vehicle” and when you delve even further in the majority of those are from unlocked vehicles.

@Canyon - time for a divorce lawyer! :D

Less to do with paddle board more to do with my street having continuous thefts from sheds, garages, cars. This is multiple people targeting the whole area of circa 50-70 houses in a night.

Yes it’s opportunistic but it’s mental how brazen they are and zero recompense

Same here. I live on a new build estate eand we have endless scroats wandering about looking for stuff to steal. Even with my house both camera and alarmed to the max with security lights down the side they just rode up, wandered round the drive, rode off. At 10pm. I could see them at 530 in different clothes on the cameras doing a recce.

The best we can do is reduce their opportunities and not be a target.

Welcome to England.

Sorry to hear about your situation
PM’d you

Depending what they are worth v excesses and now the insurance have a reason to bump your policy up next year.

Bit strange that Comfort have refused to pay out - most Insurance Policies come with some sort of Contents Cover.
Home Insurance will only cover if you have (paid extra for) "Contents away from the home" - IE Bikes etc....
But agree on the comment above about their value vs excess vs potential policy increase.
