Lazy I guess, but we are touring the highlands and would like to camp off site for a few nights while we travel the coastal roads, and I was wondering if anyone had some hot recommendations for a lovely stop with a view?

Thanks all !

There is no such thing as Covert Camping in Scotland, much like France it is permitted, there are lots of Aires springing up with some lovely views and a small charge...good luck finding somewhere to be on your own!

You will fund such soits yourself. Just keep n eye out whilst driving. If on the nc500 pull off the route a Mile or 2. Try park away from houses. Keeping the roof down the Cali is just a very unassuming van parked up. I'm on mull right now and have had no trouble parking even where it says no overnight parking. Out of season is better too. Enjoy

We’ve booked sites for the whole trip, just want to experience the quiet and landscape in more natural setting for a night or two - even in September it’s been pretty busy so far. Great for local trade of course :thumb

Have you looked at Forestry and Land Scotland Stay the Night scheme? Quiet car parks in wonderful locations. Bit more expensive than it used to be, now £10, still worth it IMHO.
What a fantastic and progressive idea.
All credit to Forestry and Land Scotland, a public body providing a creative and revenue generating service for visitors. Genius!

All of the above.
And if you use your map skills then lots of really good nights can be found tucked away. Like others, I dont publish.
The problem isn't finding a place to camp, but where to dispose of your black and grey water. Mallaig, Stoer, along with other places are now offering a facility to dispose. Or, we use a campsite after three or four nights.
The Cali is an ideal size for finding discreet locations, where Great Whites fear to go. Maximise your advantage and enjoy the most perfect country for your van.
(Currently in the Inner Hebs with a decent storm raging....)

Just to pick up on this one - "wild" camping is not legal in Sctoland, although a lot of people think it is. You can in a tent, with the landowners permission if needed, but not in a camper.

Like some others on this thread we just booked sites, none were more than 30 quid a night, all were great and enhanced the experience. No need, IMHO, to worry about local kids banging your van in the middle of the night for a laff.

We did spot a few Calis in the real wilds when we were up in the John O Groats area, on the way to the lighthouse (the true most northern point), and I can see the appeal of the spots they were at.

I travelled around Scotland a few times and stayed in lots of quiet, lovely places.

My attitude has changed a bit after following some of the conversations on this Facebook group: NC500 The dirty truth It's eye-opening and worth a read.

I find FB the last vestige of comon sense and good manners full of lunatics saying things they would never say to anyone face to face. Hence why I deleted it and Instagram a year ago and every day is brighter for it.
