Hi all, do you have this experience as me? Could you please advice me? I connected solar charger Victron 100/20. I have portable panels. When I stay somewhere longer I connect pannels to Victron. Problem is that after while central unit shows error. Flashing socket/generator icon on panel. I think it is because system see high voltage even car is not running or connected to 230v. I need to switch off and switch on control unit before driving and then it is ok. But I need to do it always and I am thinking to put permanent solar panels on roof but this error will happen after every stay and also I am thinking how car will deal with charging with solars when driving. Victron is connected correctly I think. + on battery and - on chassis. Same as many people do. Do yo have this experience and if yes what is needed to do? It looks like California does not know about solars and high voltage is not nornal for system when parked. I am thinking if it needs to connect somehow differently or program central unit to accept voltage from solars in vw dealer. Or something similar becaus I think it is not correct behaviour in case I have solar panels permanently on roof. Thanks in advance for some information.

Regards

David

Hi David,
Personally I don’t see this as a fault or problem. Since fitting solar on the roof some years ago I have often seen this on the control panel, I’m not sure of the actual technical issue and it certainly doesn’t cause me a problem. As I see it the control panel was designed to monitor and display with either the generator or a mains hookup. Start adding other sources of charge and it gets a tad upset or mixed up.
You can reset the panel only for the situation to return.
Sorry I can’t add technical reasons but I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.
As for as how you have connected solar to the battery, this is correct to show the effective solar charge on the display.

Did you configure the Victron correctly? I think you need to set it up for the correct battery types so it knows it should stop charging at a certain voltage.

The panel does use the voltage to determine if it is on the DCDC or Generator- I have all the specifics written down on a spreadsheet, but I won’t be able to get to it until tonight, you can’t reprogram it as such, but let me give you more details and see if we can work around it. Basically I think it is sensing a higher voltage but not seeing the other pins live it would expect for the DCDC or Generator .

Thanks for all answers. I do not know technical details, but yes it looks like control unit sees high Voltage and no generator or AC input so it resolves this situation as error in system. I thought maybe somebody in this forum tried to solve this issue because many of them have solars. Of course I do not know if this behavior is problem or not but if there is chance to solve it, it would be great. I see strange values on display until I reset panel and then again do not forget to configure fridge or heating... And in case of permanent panels on roof I can imagine how often It will be needed to reset :) Also I am not sure if system properly charge battery from generator when solars gives voltage and current to system while driving. Does it properly regulate charging? And who mainly regulate charging during driving? Victron or car charger? Or both? Is it possible? Or Victron can stop charging when see high voltage in system? :)
BTW, Victron charger is set in factory defaults. Thanks for advance for any info.
