Campsite in Northumberland with decent pub nearby!

Hello all
I’m planning a trip in my cali from Essex to Edinburgh. I’m hoping to stop off in Northumberland area for a night and I wondered if anyone could recommend a campsite with a nice pub nearby. Preferably one that serves nice grub too!

Caravan Club site at Old Hartley near Seaton Sluice has a pub called the Deleval Arms right next to it. Site has fantastic views and just off A1. Stayed here many times before getting the ferry from Newcastle to the Netherlands. You can always look at Searchforsites for pubs with overnight parking if you are up for that.

The Durham Amateur Rowing Club CL is also very good. It is a 10 minute walk along the river to Durham city centre which has loads of eateries.

I think the best site in Edinburgh is Drumhorr Camping and Glamping near Musselburgh. You can walk about 500m to the bus stop into town that runs every 10 minutes but does take 40 minutes. You can also walk slightly further to the train station which will have you in the centre of Edinburgh in 14 minutes. You also have an option of the Old Colliery pub at Sheriffhall park and ride which is free but best manners to eat in the pub. The pub is a chain and best to call them to book a space. There is a Coop across the road for supplies.

Old Hartley near Seaton Sluice

One of our favourite sites on that coast. Also, a fantastic Fish and Chip shop at Seaton Sluice.

Another vote for the chippy ag Seaton Sluice.
If you opt for the Old Hartley site you may wish to try to avoid any pitch on the RHS as you drive into the site. Some of these are quite small and they back on to a lane leading to a car park which can, in my experience, be noisy in the late evening (cars and bikes revving, etc). Other than that it is good site.

Not stayed at the Seaton Sluice site, but I can vouch for the fish and chip shop - famous in ge north east for the quality and portion size !!

Just be aware that some of the pitches at Old Hartley/Seaton Sluice, are on a slope. Not too much of a problem if you’ve got your ramps with you.

There are a few different styles of ramps, maybe a trip to a camping shop would be a good idea?

We bought a pair of these as they didn’t take much boot space. Over time we found they didn’t correct severe sloping fields, so on a trip around Scotland we bought a second pair, so we could piggy back. Usually we take 3 of them and that’s fine.

Note - we don’t like sleeping with heads down by more than 0.5 degree, but it’s a personal thing, and some people don’t carry any.

If you can't get in at old Hartley (it's very popular in peak season) then the "coast and castles" site has a good on site bar and food / food trucks and is quite a cool spot

Hi I’m about to book the Old Hartley site at seaton sluice. I’m not too fussed about a slight slope and haven’t got ramps but I’m wondering if the more expensive serviced pitches are likely to be more level depending where on the site they are - does anyone know? Thanks!

Never been there but looking at their photos (https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/club-...england/tyne--wear/old-hartley-club-campsite/) they all look pretty level. I wouldn't over think it.

I can confirm some are and some aren't!

In our experience it is mainly the grass pitches that are on a slope. Most of the other pitches round the road are stepped to level them off.

Thanks so much for this- I previously ordered some from amazon but when they arrived they were absolutely massive and I sent them back. I find everyone I talk to in camping shops to be absolutely clueless! (Even more so than me!) thanks for your advice - I’m going to order those.
