Hi,
I've just started researching our 6 week trip to Sweden and Finland in August/September and I'm trying to work out the best route to get there. However, I'm already stuck on the first bit! We will be coming from the Eurotunnel, Calais.

We don't particularly like the bobbing of ferries but can put up with short hops. There seems to be 2 road options, one via Denmark over bridges including the Oresund bridge or, one via Lubeck in Germany including the short 45 minute Puttgarden to Rodby ferry plus the Oresund Bridge. Google maps says that the second option will save approximately 200 kms and about 1 hour 30 mins. But is this worth it? I've had a look at pricing and with the OresundGo subscription (which looks very easy to do) and is about £85. However, the second option looks a bit of a pain, in particular being tied to booking a specific day and time both ways! Also, the cost will be more. Which option does everyone prefer and why? Maybe there is an alternative?

Thank you

The Oresund bridge is an adventure in itself! And it would be rude not to have a little tour of Denmark whilst you’re there.

Oresund Bridge and look out for the Red Line marking the border .

We've been looking at option 2, the Rodbury ferry and Øresund Bridge (the southern of your two routes.) I understand that you are tied to a day rather than restricted to times. Although you are guaranteed a space on your booked ferry, you can travel on alternative times if there is space available.
I am unable to give you first hand experience at the moment!

Use the 2 bridges every year, have a transponder now working on both bridges.

Just time your passing through the Hamburg area VERY carefully, the A7 Elbe tunnel is a huge bottleneck. Made even worse by extensive roadworks when I went that way last year.

citipark at flensburg is good place at german/danish border to stay for the night

Ah, when are you going? If it’s before August, I’d love to hear how you get on. Other replies here have suggested traffic is also a consideration! Thank you and have a great journey

Thank you for the recommendation. I’ve found it and saved it on Park 4 Night

Sorry! I don’t get it? Is that an ongoing joke on the forum?
Oh sorry, it eludes to the TV Series a few years ago called ‘The Bridge’ (a Scandi Noir drama) where the opening episode involves a dead body cut in half…… one half on the Danish side of the bridge and the other half on the Swedish side. Not so much an on going forum joke but those who know, know. ;)

Yes absolutely! We did already take this route on our way to Norway and a little bit of Denmark about 7 years ago. But this time we are going to take in Sweden and hopefully reach Finland. It’s a lot of driving and I’m wondering whether 6 weeks is enough time! Anyhow, this was the reason for trying to find a quicker route to get to the start of Sweden.

:D

Someone needs to tell Mrs Acer that the only way that 6 weeks will be enough time for that trip is if she shares the driving with her husband :headbang :D

I really hope you are her husband!

With comments flying around this post, it looks like 6 weeks may be too long in a small van!
Just saying! ;)

Unfortunately we will be travelling between Germany and Sweden in early August so probably a similar time to you.

Eh? connected?

I am indeed the wife of Acer! Mr Acer thinks he is being funny. But Mr Acer forgets that Mrs Acer spends long hours planning each day of those 6 weeks! So I think that’s fair. Don’t you agree ladies? :D

Well I agree with both of you actually, the load (planning and driving) is eased when shared :)

Absolutely! Anyway I’m only sleeping half the time Mr Acer is driving ;)

The "Via Michelin" app or website is great for calculating the time and full cost of journeys. Free to use, just set up an account and put your vehicle into the search box and bob is your slightly awkward and a little bit risky, uncle.
