After years of Solstice celebrating at either Stone Henge or Glastonbury Tor we had a complete change this year and headed North.
We were hoping for a few days away, and also celebrating the Summer Solstice without the annoyance of revellers looking for a festival vibe rather than a Solstice Celebration.
Anglesey had it all in spades - and then some.
Campsite wise, we decided to stay on a site close to RAF Valley called Bryn Ednyfed. What a site. Spotless, serviced pitches, usual facilities (toilets, showers, laundry, recycling, elsan) with the addition of a drive over waste and a great coffee machine - and a large dog exercise area. With Rhosneigr, Red Wharf Bay, Beaumaris )and Puffin island), Red Squirrel ️ Woodland not too far and indeed the whole of Anglesey more than doable - and jets to watch too - this working farm was perfect (we even made friends with the goats and chickens, unfortunately the sheep didn’t want to know lol). Certainly a superb stop which was pretty faultless for us!
Then there was the Neolithic burial site just 20 minutes away. Bryn Celli Ddu. A place where druids and Pagans (and just earth centred folk) have celebrated the solstice for as long as you or O can imagine. What a wonderful sunrise - we actually had sunshine - and all was peaceful when it did - the Sun aligns with entrance and exit of the chamber (which you can walk in). The druids said a prayer and held a celebration prior to- all was quiet as around 2 or 300 watched the sunrise - and then there was some gentle harp playing. Afterward we went to nearby Ben Llech beach (which was empty) and had a swim.
Finally, after cooking breakfast. We pulled up by another Cali (lovely couple from Chester who had been watching the dolphins in the bay) and shared a few road trip stories.
All in all - Anglesey at the solstice - fabulous and highly recommended.
