Ad Blue Warning Light - any ideas ???

Just started a big drive around Europe and topped up Ad Blue before leaving based on dash read out. I don’t think I did the reset on filling.



Once I get to France I get an engine warning light that the adblue level sensor has a problem (I carry a code reader). It’s giving me 1700 miles of range despite being full I’ve added a bit more to see if that pushes the range up a little but it’s locked at 1700.

I only need 1200 miles to get home (1000 at a push as I don’t mind a tow once n UK). I’m trying to get it looked at here in Italy but it’s a bit of a challenge - speaking to an Italian garage tomorrow to see what they suggest. And know people in Germany with a VW garage so may stop there on way home and see if they can sort it out.

Seems like a small broken sensor is causing a load of problems … I’ve got a warranty but no use in Italy.

Don't top it up.

It's a known issue:
A) Over filling results in level sensor going faulty
B) crystals forming in the ad blue tank / sensor ( requiring new ad blue tank ££££)

Something you can do is siphon off a litre (in addition to the amount you topped up - if possible)
this way you your below the max level.
Then add some Ad Blue cleaner (anti crystal) , some have reported this fixing the issue.

So.... my van shows 4500km range on the existing Ad Blue in the tank. If I want to add then van is suggesting adding between 9.5l and 18 litres.
I have bought 10l of Ad Blue (produced this month) and Wynns anti crystal additive as well. I do not want to wait till my van orders me to do it during the vacation and I think that putting in 10l will be a good call now.

With 4500 kms range left..... how many litters of Ad Blue might be already in the tank at the moment? This is important to know in estimating how much Wynns is needed?

I am missing the info how big is a tank (21l I think) and how many litters computer thinks is left in it for that 4500 kms run. But usage of Ad Blue of course depends on several factors.

On a t6 10 litres equates to 5500 miles so roughly 8800km

Edit : 10 litres when the read out for miles left is 1000 miles , so 10 litres equates to 4500 miles = 7200km

Therefore 3600km roughly = 5 litres (edited)

Remember add blue usage is not an exact science, driving style and conditions and terrain affect usage.

However the max 18litres suggested would suggest either the ad blue tank is larger (23litres ) or the usage of your ad blue is slightly higher.

Either way I think the wyns anti crystal fluid will be ok to dose assuming 15 litres,
5 already in the tank + 10 new. If (unlikely) you get an error such as add blue quality you can always add a few litres more.

FYI.....STRANGE and potentially dangerous....

So, I added today 10 litres of AdBlue (+ Winn's Anti Crystal thing of 125ml) with the ignition on as some here advised and everything registered well.
However, I see a problems with a math .....indicating that something is iffy.

Yesterday a dash displayed a 4,500kms range and possibility of adding min 9.5l and max 18.25l
Today (with new 10l in) range is 11,500kms and min 7.75 with max 12l

So if yesterday I could add safely 18l and today today I added only 10l , then if tomorrow I listen to the display again and add another 12l? !!!! This indicates then that the tank is made out of soft rubber?

No I will not play with this anymore now and will revisit this next year.... Ad Blue which went in was produced in June, so it is good for a year, and I might not drive the11.500 kms in that time.

The add blue range may adjust after a few drives, it is a "live monitor" and will adjust as levels and usage vary
