Our VW Cali 204 diesel has had coolant warning coming on intermittently over 1 year yet no obvious sign of loss and engine temp is normal. We top up coolant when needed, jobs a good'n. Service, MOT etc pass without exception. After a long drive recently we stopped after 3 hours for break and van wouldn't start. lorry driver closeby managed to get it started and we continued on journey. Coolant light came on about 1hr before final destination but temperature was normal. Arrived at destination for coffee but when we got back into van it wouldn't start. AA driver attended and thought error was major eg head gasket. Coolant tank empty and was refilled. Arranged recovery and repair and it appears EGR cooler needs replacing and glow plugs heavily corroded (one snapped into engine). After numerous tests and assessments by local reputable VW transporter garage we have come to decision that engine be replaced as well as turbo re-conned, rocker, EGR cooler replacement amongst others. We are devastated as we've had the van from demonstrator (1k mileage) and current mileage is reasonable at 71k. We don't have any warrantee in date now it is 8 yrs old. I didn't expect it to fail in this way and yet the garage explained there is shelf life on this very complex engine. Has anyone else had similar experience? I have faith in garage and they were highly recommended. I'm grateful for their attention and careful explanation.
