I’ve had one a couple of months. It does produce a good shot - on the other hand it’s quite finicky and needs a good, consistent grinder to get the best out of it. Not hard to grind a smidge too fine and end up choking it. Everything has to be properly pre heated or you end up with a lukewarm shot. You’ll need a small scale to get the dose right too (or pre weigh all the doses into ziplock bags!).

My van camping setup is the Picopresso and a 1Zpresso hand grinder. 1kg beans from Syra in Barcelona. If moto camping, it’s an aeropress and a smaller grinder that fits inside it.

I bought a 1Zpresso grinder too. The one with the Italmill burrs. Currently my go to for drop coffee at home as my Londinium espresso maker is still in storage. I bought the grinder primarily for camper van duties, but it works so well I use it all the time.

I don’t remember which model mine is, but is geared towards the finer grinds. I should try it with my home machine! It does suffer a bit from retention around the burrs

One for the coffee crowd. We’d basically shifted a lot of our camping gear into the Van this summer, including a fairly standard camping kettle.

But the mess that was forgivable when making coffee and tea camping doesn’t fly in the van… so just picked up a 1.2l Hario gooseneck kettle for the all important coffee kit. Precision pouring at its finest. And of course useful for tea too.

(As for the Aeropress conversation above - yes, inverted all the way, lets it steep a little. But pourover seems to be our go-to method at home and in the van too).

Also, we moved in a wee thing called the ‘Grindripper’ to the van - compact all-in-one burr grinder and drip coffee system. Great for those who maybe want to save space and try freshly ground coffee in their van. It’s about ten years old, now, but looks like you can still pick them up.

I am a coffee fanatic, learned some great things from this thread.
As far as I’m concerned, selecting the right coffee gear for the van gives some decisions to make:
- do you want coffee or espresso: that is totally different to each other
- does the gear make only one cup, or more?

These wacaco things I considered very much, but they can ONLY make espresso, a very small shot of it. I don’t know about cleaning.
The aero press is wat I use (inverted), with small rhino grinder, but that can never make a decent espresso, only very good coffee. I get it to make two cups of decent coffee: one in preheated cup, one in insulated cup for later use (I travel always alone). I don’t preheat the aeropress.

At home I use manual brewing as well, with aeropress but at home I like the V60 most (for normal coffee). In the van this seems too much of cleaning.
For real (afternoon) espresso I go to local shops, or at home I use a gaggia classic. The local shop makes the espresso on a gaggia-style machine.

I don't know how you guys have all the room to store your kit. My wife and I both like good coffee and have played with cafetieres and other systems. The game changer for us is coffee in bags. We both drink coffee black and prefer coffee "long" so bags are great. No silly kit, just a good kettle and some nice mugs.

"Black Americano" for me. You can keep your "Mocca Chocca Skinny Macchiato with extra foam."

Or does this make me a heathen? I'll keep the extra storage space for real ale, thank you.

Agreed. The engineering is second to none and trounces the Comandante on price. The one I have as the Italian made Italmill conical burr set. I use it even at home its so good. Only downside is switching from pour over to espresso. The settings aren't intuitive and 1 or 2 clicks can make a noticeable difference. I keep it dialed in for espresso.

We’re gonna need more detail - espresso, milk based drinks, pour over, filter, immersion, siphon, Greek/Turkish, Vietnamese. I can only cater for 6 of these in my van but I’m working on it… ;-)

Rocket Porta Via with filtered water, I’ve not found an equivalent grinder so have to prepare earlier, I guess I could take the Kruve filters to try and get a consistent grind size from a portable grinder in a pinch.

I am only half joking - I don’t use it in the van very often but have been known to take it to festivals when I’m playing top trumps with my friends on who has the most Gucci camping set up.
